Obama Requires YOU to SERVE, H.R.1388, "The Give Act" to reform the National Service Laws

My concerns are many with this Bill.

What gives the Government the right to require individuals to give 3 years service under the guise of “volunteer” service? It is not explicit exactly who is required but I think they get the Bill passed and then iron out the details.

It talks about uniforms and “camps.” They revise the word “camps” and call it “campus.” There is language about Seniors and Community organizations.

Some language in the Bill is particularly disturbing like:

- “leverage Federal investments to increase State, local, business, and philanthropic resources to address national and local challenges;

- encourage national service efforts to address pressing national challenges, such as improving education for low-income students, increasing energy conservation, and improving the health, well-being, and economic opportunities of the neediest individuals in the Nation;

-expand and strengthen service-learning programs through year-round opportunities, including during the summer months, to improve the education of children and youth and to maximize the benefits of national and community service, in order to renew the ethic of civic responsibility and the spirit of community to children and youth throughout the United States;

- increase service opportunities for our Nation’s retiring professionals

-encourage members of the Baby Boom generation to partake in service opportunities

- Civilian Community Corps shall be called the “National Civilian Community Corps”

-the Director determines appropriate “Uniforms”

Why does the Government have to create Laws to make people Volunteer? The Government should NOT legislate Volunteerism.

-How much money will this National program cost?

-Take note of the Miscellaneous Section (Title VI) of the Bill. Very Strange!!!

-Sec. 601. Amtrak waste disposal. -Sec. 602. Exchange program with countries in transition from totalitarianism to Democracy.

From the Misc. section, #6104: (6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

MANDATORY!

Here is the Obama spin on it:

The above link is an article from the Department of Education and Labor.

via Obama Requires YOU to SERVE, H.R.1388, “The Give Act” to reform the National Service Laws.

HR 1388, will hit the House floor on Tuesday. It is called the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (The Give Act.) The House is scheduled to Rule this week. Sponsored by Democrat Representative Carolyn McCarthy (NY), Education and Labor Committee. The objective is to reauthorize and reform the national service laws.

Democrat Rep. McCarthy is sponsoring the bill with 25 co-sponsors, ALL Democrats, including Charlie Rangel. Need I say more.

NO! The ability of someone to craft an argument against my points is of EXTREME consequence! You cannot make broad blanket statements of horrible policies with nothing to back it up! That is insanity.

I am not blind…I read the bill…there is NOTHING IN IT THAT MAKES THIS SERVICE MANDATORY! Your own delusional fears have led you to fear something that has not even come close to occurring yet.

Where the money for this bill came from is irrelevant, as is the connection with teachers in your county. That is not an issue with mandatory service, the entire point of your “warnings.” Calling attention to things like the stimulus bill and declining teachers is pandering to peoples fears and has no impact on whether or not this bill will initiate mandatory service.

My opinion on this matter is that, like every other administration in American history, many people will express fears about bills, and then, there will be no major changes in peoples lives. Honestly, when was the last governmental bill that ACTUALLY changed your life?

Sure, there are tax bills that affect your salary by a few hundred dollars either way. And, I’m not saying that isn’t important. All of these bills slowly infringe upon America’s freedoms. I am against governmental intervention in my wallet and life. However, my life now, is essentially the same as it was 20 years ago. These politicians minor emphases on governmental spending, morality, and other aspects of politics do not affect our everyday life.

If you have issues with the slow infringements on our freedoms, as I do, then please say that. Do not resort to sensationalist attacks just to rile people up and “warn” them.

  2. Diss Info Agent says:

So the part where it says “Look into what’s fair” Doesn’t have the great potential for abuse?

The ability of someone to craft an argument against HR 1388 is of EXTREME consequence! I can make broad blanket statements of horrible policies with nothing to back it up! That is my perogative

Your opening topic was off topic any way

It’s my opinion that where that money came from is very important, in light of the fact that they can’t fund the schools sufficiently.

BTW…Is there a run on the stores yet?

  3. A Guy says:

Sure, if you’re going by the quote posted above, it certainly looks like the potential for abuse. Its very easy to take a single quote from a bill of thousands of paragraphs and make it look sinister. Moreover, this statement doesn’t make the service mandatory. It only has, by your own words, “the potential” for abuse.

Newsflash: Every act has the POTENTIAL for abuse, its the government. This bill, HAS NO REQUIREMENTS OF MANDATORY SERVICE FOR ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

By your logic, because it institutes a new organization, that organization could then be corrupted in order to be abused and to turn the system into a mandatory work program. However, it also has the possibility, the much greater possibility, to do just what it states. It also has the possibility to turn America into the greatest nation ever and ensure world peace, eliminate world hunger, and give everyone a blowjob. The likelihood of that last scenario is extremely minimal. But, it has just the same probability as your doomsday scenario.

As to your second point, I agree, the ability of someone to craft an argument agasint HR1388 is of extreme importance. However, no one has done that yet. As you admitted, you’ve simply embraced your perogative to make blanket statements with no evidence or support.

That’s great, all the more freedom to you. However, that basically makes you a nut, because only someone insane would believe something with no proof or evidence. Moreover, why should anyone believe you if you are just shouting your opinion? You need support, evidence, or even some sort of argumentative strategy before anyone but another nut would believe you!

Finally, for the last time, no, your opinion about school funding does not matter in this debate. This debate is about the prospect of mandatory service either within or resulting from this bill. In no way, does school funding affect either notion of mandatory service.

Yes, school funding would be important to raise if we were having a debate about Obama’s spending policies or general platform. In that case, I would agree with you, that, yes, education needs FAR GREATER FUNDING in the the government budget. However, I would disagree with you that this bill should be cut to achieve that goal. As this bill actually provides money for students who are attaining higher education.

In closing, the estimated cost of this bill is $3 per American for the entire year of 2010. Just something to think about while you wait for that imaginary run on the stores.

  4. Diss Info Agent says:

Ok, you win, I’m a nut job

    Do you have the answer?

Are you on the band wagon with this bill?

If that’s all it costs why can’t we fund
    schools?

    P.S Google “Martial law Schenectady”

Hurry out there and get the necessities while you can

OH BTW…I’m gonna go get a blow job now.

    Good luck

  5. A Guy says:

    1. The first step is admitting you have a problem

    2. The answer to what?

    3. I support this bill, because there is nothing inherently sinister in it. It merely provides opportunities for students to make money by helping out the community, and more support for Americorps and related organizations. There is no bandwagoning here.

    4. You’d have to ask Obama, the Democrats, and the Republicans, because this is an unrelated, platform issue, with no bearing on whether You or I are forced into serving. If they fund schools, we could still have mandatory service, if they don’t fund schools, we could still have mandatory service.

    5. This martial law has nothing to do with this bill. Why bring it up? It has to do with some police officers making bad decisions, all at once, and a temporary solution needing to be found. Not to mention, that once again, there is not now, nor was there ever, martial law in Schenectady. You are once again referencing something bad that may happen.

    6. There is no reason to get necessities, we will have them in abundance for quite sometime. Just for frame of reference though, if there were going to be chaos and a run on the stores, when would this happen? Today? This week? This month? This year? Since you’re so sure, you know that right?

    7. Good, everyone can use a good bj! :)

    8. Just for reference, there have still not been any legitimate, evidence supported, responses to how this bill requires service, or how this bill could mandate mandatory service.

  6. Diss Info Agent says:

Well …You’ll find no sport arguing with me.

Find a thread where they’re talking about this, they’re strong in their opinions and have the facts to back it up.

Get back to me, I would love to follow your domination on the subject.

Till then I’ll hunker and wait for the flash.

  7. A Guy says:

That’s the problem…no one has the facts to back this up…because there aren’t any.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for that flash.

  26. cbarkulis says:

I feel we are being railroaded into this bill unwillingly because the media and congress are treating it like just some other provisional bill that keeps the country running as usual. They are wrong. This is vital to not only our future but our children. This bill is potentially setting up a draft for a domestic force that serves the federal government. It would also circumvent the fact that the military cannot operate domestically since it is not labeled as a federal armed forces branch.

Anyway, this was written about at http://www.righnotwrong.com . the link to the post is here: http://rightnotwrong.com/2009/03/22/the-death-of-charity.aspx

  27. A Guy says:

You are incorrect cbarkulis. This bill does not “potentially” set up a draft. There is NO mention of a draft in the entire work.

Your use of the term “potentially” is highly suspect. This bill also “potentially” could give every American a million dollars. It won’t, but it could “potentially” do that. Every bill could “potentially” do anything. That’s what “potentially” means.

You are taking an extreme, unfounded, unsupported, view of what this bill is designed to do. Until you can quote a passage from the bill that specifically mentions a draft, kindly stop your fear mongering and idiocy.

  28. Kahoneez says:

People need to get over this left v. right BS, this is a NWO plan or CFR plan since the Gary Hart is on board .
Mandatory Service , ” As well funded as the military ” are U kidding me , with over a TRILLION spent every year on military and ” security ” we need this additional gov. program , are we that paranoid or is there ulterior plans for population control and brainwashing .
And for this dual citizen , Israel firster to come along (RAHM) tell us now , ” Citizenship is not an entitlement program ” says the obvious , they want to make new requirements to be a citizen and add new conditions and RAHM , later admitted ” the 3 months MIGHT BE LONGER ” so that tells you its a soft sell ,with intentions later to increase and change the requirements AGAIN .
We don’t need a sense ” what it is to be a citizen ” I KNOW already Obama , we have the Constitution , the Bill of Rights , we won’t except your secret agenda to brainwash and control the youth .

  29. A Guy says:

That is the most incoherent blathering I have ever seen. I honestly don’t know what your opinion on this subject is.

  30. army mom says:

this is very scary! The young people today make us baby boomers look tame. Maybe you really want the government to take more control, don’t know. You need to review your history books and realize that “history does repeat itself!”

  31. A Guy says:

Actually, I’m a history grad student, I’ve done more “reviewing” of history books than you’ve ever done.

That being said, where in this act is the government taking more direct control of your life?

Please point out actual examples from the bill. DO NOT include statements like “If this keeps on like this,” or “This could lead to,” or “possibly.”

Those are pointless, fear mongering, non-rational, non-supported OPINIONS. And what’s worse, they are opinions from an internet blog.

The complete lack of support for any of these claims has been shown time and time again.

Read the posts above, everyone comes in and says “blah, blah, blah, the government is going to brainwash us to kill Jews like Hitler did, and eat our children!!! BLAHHHHH!”

Then, when asked to support any of these views, they either admit they cannot, or do not post again.

Please, it is you that needs to wake up and realize that not everything the government does is designed to destroy the society is is designed to protect.

The fact that they feel it’s worthwhile to analyze “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed” tells me that they think forced participation is a good thing. My father gave his right hand and most of the muscles in his legs defending our right to freedom of choice. It’ll be a cold day in hell before they force myself or my daughter to “volunteer” I do understand that it’s not in this current legislation, but they’re setting up for it. You can’t deny that.

“Specific Topics- In carrying out its general purpose under subsection (a), the Commission shall address and analyze the following specific topics:…(6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”

Because if he was tied to such false teachings it would hurt him. Now he embraces and boast that he was raised by learning the Koran. The man tells the audience what they want to hear. Gods word calls such a man a deceiver.
