Buffalo Snow Plan To Lean on New Equipment, Private Plows

Buffalo, everyone in the world goes to Buffalo when they are doing a story about snow removal. I remember a recent report on the Weather Channel that said, “when it comes to snow removal, Buffalo knows how to do it”!

I think the only place in WNY that actually knows how to do snow removal is the Buffalo/Niagara Airport. As far as the “City” goes, it sucks, plain and simple snow removal in the city of Buffalo has top be some of the worst in the country. So Mayor Byron Browns “New Plan”? To use private contractors. Gee Byron, the unions are not gonna like that.

We have had a couple good snow storms this season, every community seems to handle it pretty well, Buffalo on the other hand always seems top claim that we are on top of it, the roads are 70% clear. While that statement is being pumped out through the media, the people are looking out their windows at streets that have not seen a plow in days. Main thoroughfares and covered with a slick layer of slushy, slippery dirty snow. Streets where there is no off street parking stay buried because the big plows can’t fit down them.

It blows me away realizing the city of Buffalo does not have a fleet of small plows like F-550 dump trucks, fitted with V-shaped angle plows so the streets can be opened. These trucks when loaded with sand can easily go up and down these tough streets and open them for traffic, at least help the residents get out.

For a city that gets it’s share of snow, snow removal has never been up to the challenge. Before you beat me up for not living in the city, I have and have lived on the West side and the North East side. I am glad I moved for many reasons and live on Grand Island where our tax dollars really do work when it comes to snow removal.

Buffalo Snow Plan To Lean on New Equipment, Private Plows

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown’s forthcoming snow removal plan will address troubles with keeping side streets as clear as the main arteries, by using a new mix of equipment and a greater use of private contractors.

“We are reviewing a lot of things,” Brown said Friday, in an interview on Buffalo’s Early News. “…when we release the report on our snowfighting review , we will talk about new equipment and new technology, and smaller equipment will certainly be part of it.”

“We believe that private contractors will definitely be part of the mix. Our plan now does allow us to use private contractors. Our (new) plan will probably be to utilize them a lot more quickly than in the past.”, Brown says.

Just before Christmas Buffalo was hit by a large snow storm, that left many side streets impassable and clogged with snow. On December 24, Brown launched an internal review saying ” I have not been happy with the overall post-storm clean-up effort, particularly in our residential neighborhood side streets.”

The results of his review are expected to be unveiled next week.
