My God, the more I read the less I want to know. It’s such a corrupt house of cards. Is this really the kind of person you want to be affiliated or associated with? I would think not. She will probably win election too, that is the real sad part about her future. Sad for us, sad for the city of New York but, to dam typical these days for our corrupt system.
I think we are all getting a real taste and eyeful of the dirty side of politics, the sleaze factor is getting incredibly high and it really makes me feel nauseas.
Finance honcho treasures silence on Gov. Paterson’s expenses
City Hall Confidential
A Queens woman who could answer many of the questions about Gov. Paterson’s campaign expenditures has been staying mum - even though she’s thinking of running for office.
Joan Flowers, a well-known Democratic operative in southeast Queens and Paterson’s campaign treasurer, has declined several interview requests to speak about her role.
It’s been a lucrative association for the 60-year-old lawyer, who graduated from St. John’s University law school in 1988.
Paterson’s various campaign committees have paid Flowers’ company, Jaymacdee Consultants, $119,500 for professional and consulting services over the past two years when Paterson ran for lieutenant governor and then in his first year in office.
Another $3,500 payment was described as a reimbursement.
The new governor has been besieged with questions about his expenses since he revealed last week he had several affairs - including one with a government staffer - during a rough patch with his wife.
Under normal circumstances, Flowers might appreciate a little attention.
She is reportedly considering a 2009 bid for the City Council seat that will be vacated by Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) when he is term-limited out of office.
Flowers has a sketchy history with accurate record-keeping.
She was once the campaign treasurer for Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-Queens), a good friend of Paterson. The gig did not end well.
Last month, Meeks and his campaign committee agreed to pay a $63,000 fine because the books for his 2004 race - when Flowers was treasurer - were such a mess.
Among the sloppy accounting the Federal Elections Commission found in a 2006 audit was that Meeks used $17,000 in campaign cash for personal expenses, including $6,230 for a personal trainer. The congressman agreed to reimburse his committee.
But Flowers has plenty of friends in high places.
She is close to state Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-Queens), another Paterson pal. Smith followed his friend as Senate minority leader when Paterson left to become lieutenant governor.
Smith has paid Flowers and Jaymacdee about $50,000 in professional, fund-raising and consulting fees since 2003, state records show.
In a weird mix of entertainment, crime and politics, Flowers was identified in a 2006 book, “Notorious C.O.P.,” as a lawyer who represented Lydia High, the receptionist at a Hollis recording studio in 2002 when Jason Mizell - known as the rapper Jam Master Jay - was shot to death inside.
