New Fight to Take Down Grand Island Tolls

(Grand Island, NY, February 22, 2008) - - We’re following new developments in the fight to take down the Grand Island tolls. News 4’s Jericka Duncan has more.

The battle to eliminate the tolls has been picking up steam for quite some time here in western New York.

Now two lawmakers are proposing a plan to make the Grand Island tolls disappear for good.

State Senator George Maziarz and Assemblyman Sam Hoyt are holding a news conference Friday. They will announce legislation they are sponsoring designed to end the toll battle.

The two lawmakers are spearheading a bill to put the 190 under control of the State Department of Transportation, instead of the Thruway Authority.

It would eliminate the need for tolls because under state control maintenance would be paid for with federal funds.

Grand Island resident Rus Thompson has been a major player in the fight against the tolls.

Rus Thompson said, “Once its turned over to the Department of Transportation, it opens the door for federal funding for maintaining. They’re in pretty sad shape right now.”

“Once we get legislation actually passed and once we get the support of the D.O.T., which we do have, all we gotta do is wait from the governor to sign this law.”

We’ll be following the developing story throughout the day, and we’ll bring you the very latest on News 4 at Noon, 5 and 6.

The news conference is scheduled for ten o’clock Friday morning at Grand Island Town Hall.
