I would rather have the queen of spin in there than any of the others that claim to be in contention for this position. What we need is someone that is willing to work with Chris Collins, not someone that will carry the union banner and refuse to do anything to change the way we do business in this zoo of a legislature.

To call Whyte the most liberal is being kind she is a pure socialist bordering on a communist.

Four vie to lead County Legislature
Democrats to fill post within weeks

Lynn M. Marinelli faces three challengers.

Four Erie County legislators are jockeying to become next year’s chairman, one of the most important perches in county government.

The chairman selects committee leaders, hires and fires the legislative staff and determines which items to vote on. The post adds $10,000 to a legislator’s base salary of $42,588.

Next year’s leader also will set the collective tone in dealing with Chris Collins, the new Republican county executive, and his agenda.

The Legislature’s next leader is certain to be a Democrat, since Democrats control the Legislature 12-3. Leonard R. Lenihan, chairman of the County Democratic Party, said Thursday he has not endorsed any of the aspirants but expects Democrats in the Legislature to select a leader within a couple of weeks.

One of these candidates, presented in no particular order, will be selected behind closed doors:

• Lynn M. Marinelli of the Town of Tonawanda, the current chairwoman, now is among the longest-serving county lawmakers. She served as executive director of the County Commission for the Status of Women during the administration of County Executive Dennis T. Gorski and initially was elected to the Legislature in 1996. She then led a key committee, became majority leader and then, last year, the chairwoman.

But Marinelli has never had a solid following. She ruffled feathers last year when she leapt into a short-lived candidacy for county executive. She was stung recently when every other Democrat ignored her plea to prevent gridlock by letting the state-appointed control board take over as the government’s borrowing agent. Marinelli became an island of one, hindering her chance to become chairwoman again
