How much will this cost us? What is the reasoning behind this? It’s all about the votes do not be fooled. In no way at all did Chertoff agree that illegals should get licenses.
Hoyt applauds enhancements to Spitzer’s licensing plan (From Press Release)
Enhancements address economic and security concerns
Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) applauded the Governor’s announcement today that agreement had been reached with Department of Homeland Security to allow New York to implement an enhanced driver’s license in addition to a non-federally approved driver’s license which would merely be utilized for driving purposes and is not for federal security purposes, such as crossing the border.
Hoyt commented “This agreement not only offers New Yorkers additional flexibility in selecting the right license for their individual needs, but creates strident new security measures and ensures that our Upstate economy will not be impaired. The federal government’s passport plan would have presented an economic hardship to many which would have harmed our economy through decreased cross-border travel. Earlier this year I called upon the Governor to act swiftly in implementing an enhanced license program to ensure the vitality of our cross-border traffic, and I am pleased that he and Secretary Chertoff have worked diligently to reach an agreement that will allow New York to be a leader in offering an alternative to the passport requirement for cross-border travel.”
Hoyt represents the 144th Assembly District, which includes the Peace Bridge crossing.
