Spitzer forges compromise on driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants

Gov. Spitzer announced on Saturday a new plan to offer three kinds of New York driver’s licenses – a move that might quell fears about giving licenses to illegal immigrants, but also brought sharp criticism from both backers and opponents of his original idea.

Spitzer ran into powerful resistance when he proposed making driver’s licenses available to undocumented immigrants – not only from Republican rivals but from voters.

Driver’s license plan could bankrupt New York

Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s recently dictated policy to allow illegal immigrants to obtain New York driver’s licenses will eventually bankrupt the state.

The governor should immediately administer lie detector tests to determine how many of his advisers are Republicans disguised as Democrats. This idea of granting legal status to someone who has broken the law is the antithesis of what the governor once represented, and it will provide the state Republican Party with plenty of mud to sling for years.

New research from the Public Policy Institute finds that New York state has lagged behind most other states in key employment sectors over the last 10 years.

PPI is the research arm of The Business Council of New York State Inc., which is the state’s largest pro-business lobbyist organization. For its latest report, the institute used job figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Because of Spitzer’s attempt to give illegals a vote in New York (by giving the a recognized ID) real New Yorkers will likely find normal use of NY Driver’s Licenses curtailed boarding aircraft and entering federal buildings. Spitzer’s actions may be making a NY driver’s license as valuable as a bucket of warm spit.

Immigration requirement pertaining to the Real ID act of 2005 …

Before issuing a DL/ID, a state shall require and verify valid documentary evidence that the person: (i) is a U.S. citizen, (ii) is an alien lawfully admitted for permanent or temporary residence, (iii) has a conditional permanent resident status, (iv) ) is a refugee or has been granted asylum, (v) has a valid, unexpired nonimmigrant visa or nonimmigrant visa status, (vi) has a pending application for asylum, (vii) has a pending or approved application for temporary protected status, (viii) has approved deferred status, or (ix) has a pending application for adjustment of status to that of an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence or conditional permanent resident status

Further, regarding the ID’s not complying with the act…

In any case in which a state issues a DL/ID that does not satisfy the federal requirements, a state shall ensure that that the DL/ID: (A) clearly states on its face that it may not be accepted for federal identification or any other official purpose, and (B) uses a unique design or color indicator to alert federal agencies or other law enforcement personnel that it may not be accepted for any such purpose

An October 21st New York Times editorial defends the order by Governor Eliot Spitzer permitting illegal aliens to receive New York State drivers’ licenses.

Currently, it is necessary for every driver’s license applicant to present to the Department of Motor Vehicles a Social Security number or a letter from the Social Security Administration explaining why the applicant has no Social Security number. Under the governor’s new executive order, applicants will need only to present a passport issued by the United States or any foreign government for identification purposes. The presentation of such a foreign passport cannot verify that the applicant has not overstayed his or her legal presence in the United States and some say counterfeit passports are available for purchase.

Well it appears that the Socialist Workers are against anything that even comes close to holding teachers accountable. Why? because it weakens the union. Who cares about the teachers, who cares about the education our kids get, as long as the union stays strong. What a crock of manure.

However, thanks to Weingarten’s “bonus” plan, merit pay is now a reality in the New York Public Schools. The delegates’ assembly meeting was a historic turning point in the history of our union–for the worse.
