Allegations of widespread violations have given prosecutor ‘road map’
DA puts priority on Clark campaign probe

District Attorney Frank J. Clark said Wednesday he is assigning a high priority to allegations of widespread election law violations in the campaign of unsuccessful county executive candidate Paul T. Clark.

In addition, the district attorney said he will investigate a vast amount of information volunteered by former Paul Clark supporter Michael W. Mullins on Tuesday as a starting point for a probe that could lead into several hidden corners of Erie County politics.

“It certainly is a priority right now,” the district attorney said. “Now we have a road map of whom to talk to and where to go.

“Sometimes when you get into these things, you don’t know where they end up.”

The unusual presence of FBI agents in the joint interview of Mullins also signals a federal interest in the information, he said, though most likely in differing areas.

“But we are not on parallel paths in the woods,” the district attorney said. “We are working together on this.”

Clark said his investigator and the FBI met for several hours with Mullins, whom he described as “open, unguarded, candid and fully responsive to anything that was asked.”

Mullins appeared without an attorney and produced documents he says support the accusations that on behalf of the Paul Clark campaign, he handed $20,000 in cash to a Buffalo marketing consultant that was never reported to the state Board of Elections as required by law.

District Attorney Clark said he now wants to talk with the consultant, Donald Turchiarelli, as well as a Paul Clark campaign worker who said she was paid off the books by Mullins. He also said he will soon interview Clark, the West Seneca supervisor who lost the Sept. 18 Democratic primary for county executive, and campaign treasurer Mark Koller.
