On top of that the Pledge of allegiance was, from what I understand, an agreement the confederate states made to rejoin the USA. The pledge has also been changed so it is not the way it used to be. He WAS showing respect to the US because; he stood quietly and watched the flag when I was growing up we were told if we did not say the pledge to at least give everyone else respect and stand quietly.
