Governor touts 4 major projects for Buffalo-Niagara region

Upstate New York’s largest city is the launching pad for Governor Spitzer’s ambitious plans for boosting economic development in struggling cities across the region.

Spitzer was in Buffalo today to announce the first of what he says will be a series of regional economic development plans, dubbed “City-by-City.”

He says a “one-size-fits-all” approach to the problem hasn’t worked. Instead, the governor says his proposals tailor economic development efforts to fit specific needs in each region of upstate New York.

For western New York, that means four major projects in Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

They include redeveloping Buffalo’s waterfront and turning a former federal building into a luxury hotel, condos and office space.

Spitzer’s plan also calls for beginning the expansion of Buffalo’s Peace Bridge, the city’s often-traffic clogged link to Ontario, Canada.
