City Hall versus Truthfulness!

We have to start asking Why?

By James Drenning

Once again, honesty and truthfulness in City Hall have been called into question by several sources. Are there members of Mayor Brown’s staff that are less than honest? And if so, what should the Mayor do about it? The most recent episodes were caused by two events, one minor and one Major.

First the minor event: It seems as though someone with keys to the Mayor’s family car used them to crash into a couple of parked cars and then walked away. The Police do not suspect any member of the Mayor’s family of knowing who that person is.

One would hope that as soon as the police solve this mystery, that this criminal would be shown the same leniency that a member of the Mayor’s staff was shown when he hit a motorcyclist and left the scene of the accident while driving under the influence, and didn’t face any prosecution whatsoever.

Now to the Major Event: What lead up to the death of a 24 year old construction worker in the Webb Building?

We have been reading about people of low-character in the events that followed the very avoidable death of this young man, but what about the events that lead up to it?

We all know of the tragic death of Jonathan Fundalinski, and I believe that the events leading up to it are criminal.

A building inspector whose reputation is beyond reproach, Peter Klemann, called police to enforce his stop-work order, and according to Inspector Klemann, “Steven Casey told the police to go back to the station house and not enforce my stop-work order.”

If like most people, you are unfamiliar with whom Steven Casey is. He is an aide to Mayor Brown who wants to be refered to as “the first assistant deputy mayor” or “deputy first assistant mayor” or something like that. He replaced the two turtles that roamed freely in his room with a piranha, and installed spy cameras in City Hall to watch who talks with whom. Up until now he and his antics have been foolish, caused the Mayor trouble on occasion, given the press a lot to joke about, but the incidences have always been harmless. But that was up until now.

When Inspector Klemann noticed that the working conditions at the Webb Building were anything but usual, his duty was to stop the work that wasn’t being performed properly. His duty commands him to issue a verbal order to stop-work immediately. He doesn’t come armed with paperwork because he doesn’t know that he is going to find an improper condition. When this occurred, the job site was to stop immediately. It is as simple as that. When his order to stop-work was issued, and intentionally refused, Mr. Klemann called the police because the police have a duty to immediately stop what was about to be turned into a horrific tragedy.

According to Casey “the police officer requested my assistance in dealing with the matter. I advised her to tell the parties to take a break and to immediately go to Commissioner Tobe’s office in City Hall.”

Why?

Why was Steven Casey, the Mayors aide, in the middle of the police chain of command?

Why was the Mayors aide in the middle of the inspectors chain of command? Why was he called at all?

Some say it is because a developer with political connections wanted it that way. Who knows? Mr. Klemann says that he spoke to the police after their conversation and that “they felt that they were ordered to not enforce the stop-work order.”

We all know that people like this can cover up things after the fact. But there is question I like to use when there is a doubt about of who’s telling the truth, it’s “Would you buy a used car from this person?”

In the case of Mr. Klemann, I wouldn’t hesitate. In the case of Mr. Casey, well you’ll have to answer that one for yourself. I know of at least one family that wouldn’t.
