New York Legislature OKs $121B Budget
It’s official: New York state has a budget. Lawmakers missed the midnight deadline because the final two bills didn’t return from the printer in time The bills were passed early Sunday.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer and lawmakers reached a final agreement on the $121 billion spending plan Saturday night, but by law, the actual bill has to be printed and on lawmakers’ desks before they can vote on them.
Among the budget highlights: $1.3 billion in property tax rebates and health coverage for the state’s 400,000 uninsured children.
One controversial addition is cutting nearly $1 billion worth of Medicaid spending.
Lawmakers also agreed to double the number of charter schools to 200 with up to 100 of those in New York City. The state is allowing an additional $1.8 billion in education spending, a hefty increase.
The $121 billion budget is one of the most expensive in decades.
