Jury Begins Hearing Evidence

(Buffalo, NY, January 19, 2007) - - An Erie County grand jury could hand down indictments as early as Friday against accused bike path rapist and killer Altemio Sanchez.

The jury has begun hearing evidence in the killings of Majane Mazur and Linda Yalem. Prosecutors say Sanchez’ DNA was also found on the steering column of murder victim Joan Diver. But District Attorney Frank Clark is not ready to bring that case to a grand jury just yet.

Erie County District Attorney Frank Clark said, “We don’t have any DNA on the body, and we didn’t find anything to which we could draw DNA from the crime scene so being in the car doesn’t necessarily put you at the crime scene, so we simply have to bridge that gap.”

A photo of a smiling Sanchez with his wife is has popped up over the Internet. It was apparently taken at the Lafayette Tap Room in Buffalo during a reunion party for Barrister Information Systems on September 29th.

That’s the same day prosecutors believe he killed Joan Diver. We will have the very latest on the case on News 4 at Noon, 5 and 6.
