Conservatives Urge Cutting Taxes and Spending
to Spur Economic Growth

Ft. Hamilton Station, NY – State Chairman Michael R. Long, in a letter to Governor Eliot Spitzer urged him to incorporate the tax and spending section of the Conservative Party Platform to stimulate economic growth through out New York State. The Conservative Party is the voice of New York’s taxpayers, and has been since its inception. Long believes enactment of its formula will help taxpayers and business.

The text of the letter follows:

While I fully understand that you have been involved with the negotiations regarding the New York State Budget since your election, I would sincerely like to take this opportunity to make some recommendations for you to incorporate in this year’s budget.

The New York State Conservative Party has long championed the reduction of all taxes and I am heartened to know that you believe this is important for all residents in New York State. We both acknowledge that property taxes, personal income taxes, business taxes, school taxes, sales tax and the sundry other taxes that New York collects has become a major burden on New Yorkers.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg certainly understood how important it is to reduce taxes when he proposed in his “State of the City” presentation that New York City permanently eliminate the sales tax on clothing under $110 and the need to reduce real property taxes.

We urge you to do the same. We also urge you to cut spending. Editorial Boards across the state recognize the onus placed on our citizens who are paying the highest taxes in the Nation. New York continues to lose its brightest young citizens to places in the United States with a lesser tax liability. To stop this trend

We urge you to hold state spending growth at or preferably below inflation.
We urge you to reduce the personal income tax rate.
We urge you to reduce the corporate income tax on all businesses.
We urge you to eliminate the state income tax on dividend earnings.
We urge you to eliminate the New York State Estate Tax.
We urge you to eliminate unfunded mandates.
We urge you to reduce real property taxes.
We urge you to reduce the cost of Medicaid.
And most of all we urge you to cap the growth of all future state spending.

Governor Spitzer, you promised New Yorkers on “Day One” everything would change. We urge you to incorporate these changes in New York’s budget, New York cannot afford not to. Before one more person leaves the Empire State, give them a reason to believe that the tax burden will be permanently reduced, give them a reason to stay. Let your budget reflect that you understand that spending must be cut and we will have the opportunity to place a cap on future spending growth.
