End of a dynasty
Ball’s election season triumphs also made history.
The most stunning results came in September, when Ball dismantled veteran New York State Assemblyman Willis Stephens Jr. in a Republican primary, with the challenger winning by a landslide, earning a whopping 71 percent of the vote.
The blow Ball delivered to Stephens, whose father and grandfather held the seat, ended the family’s dominance in state politics, which began in 1926.
Ball will take over representing the 99th Assembly District, which covers North Salem, Somers, Yorktown, Pawling, Southeast, Patterson and Carmel.
Although there is little natural link between Hall and Ball’s governmental charges, a possible early chill seems to be forming among the incoming freshmen, with Hall declining an NCN invitation to appear in a photograph with Ball.
But Hall, who fancied himself an outsider during the election campaign, would have trouble denying that Ball’s victory was also a grassroots effort.
Either way, Hall, in responding to the news he was named co-winner of the newsmaker prize, said, “This was a victory for the outsider, the long shot, for someone not initially endorsed by the party apparatus.â€
For anyone familiar with Ball’s lone wolf rhetoric, Hall’s comments could be mistaken for the Putnam Republican’s.
“It’s nice to see in American politics you can still go door to door, work tirelessly, and win,†said Ball, who often points out that he operates outside of the “Republican Party machine.â€
Though he said he’s focused on the work he’s about to perform in the New York State Assembly, Ball – passionate about federal issues such as immigration reform – acknowledged he’s eyeing Hall’s congressional seat.
The newsmakers even engaged in a heated verbal sparring match over immigration at a Putnam County political forum this fall.
And they weren’t even vying for the same seat – yet.
“I’m definitely considering it,†Ball said of a 2008 challenge of Hall.
