A 9 to 5 vote on Thursday marked approval by the Erie County Legislature of cost-of-living pay raises for about 15 staff employees.

Supporters of the raise, roughly $1,500 per staff member, pointed out that staff members have not had a cost-of-living adjustment in seven years while the rest of the county’s employees have.

“My staff works very hard for me,” said Michele Iannello, D-Kenmore.

Each legislator receives about $33,000 to hire personal staff employees. Most hire one full-time employee, but some, such as Iannello, split the money between two part-timers.

Over 150 county staff members received similar cost-of-living adjustments in the budget, but the 15 legislative staff members were left out at the last second because of questions about wording in the resolution.
