Is Congress spending your money in secret?
Congress is considering a bill — the Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations measure — that presently contains 1,867 earmarks worth more than a half-billion tax dollars and averaging nearly $268,000 each. Many are for things that sound like worthy causes such as “hospital facilities and equipment,” yet none of the sponsoring congressmen put their names on their earmarks.
That’s why The Examiner newspapers have joined with the Sunlight Foundation, Porkbusters.org, and Citizens Against Government Waste in posting the database of earmarks in the Labor-HHS appropriations and inviting readers to help identify the congressmen behind each earmark. Organizations like The Heritage Foundation, National Taxpayers Union and Club for Growth blog are linking to the database. The database was obtained from a congressional source and has been checked and double-checked. Congress may still modify the bill, approve it as is or reject it.
Check out the earmarks for your state and then call your congressman and ask if he or she sponsored any of your state’s earmarks. If the answer is yes, ask why the congressman’s name isn’t on the earmark. If you recognize the institution designated to receive the earmarked tax dollars, call them and ask them what they intend to do with your money.
Then email us at info@examiner.com with the subject line “Earmarks” and tell us what you found out. The Examiner will be asking more questions about who got the earmarks and why, so your information could be very important. You will be part of an army of citizen journalists determined to shine some much-needed light on spending decisions made behind closed doors by powerful Members of Congress.

They spend and spend our money like it’s their to burn. Politicians are out of control on all sides of the aisle. I think it is time for a new major party, dump the old and bring in the new. When is the insanity gonna stop? When we eliminate their ability to buy their votes with our money.

Yea, these guys are really out of control… Would you deny funding for blind children and cancer victims?!?!? If its not governments RESPONSIBILITY to fund these things, then who’s is it?
Sure Adam, you want my blood too? How about my first born child.
How much is enough? How much?
[…] Do they think we are idiots? By admin Thanks to Albanys Insanity for posting Congress is considering a bill. “$3,000,000 New York City College of New York for the Charles
B. Rangel Center for Public Service to prepare individuals for
careers in public service, which may include establishing an
endowment, library and archives for such center”
You’re joking right? Rus doesn’t need a $3,000,000 center for
public service to properly prepare him pay attention to the issues
& sacrifice everything to offer himself in service to the public.
That would be true public service, not the bastarded Charlie
Rangel version. I would be surprised if 10% of that $3,000,000
is actually used for the purpose for which it’s intended.
Despite the volume of measured success with natural cancer
remedies, Roswell Park continues to bleed the public trust,
while boasting a 3% recovery rate.
Traditionally, funds for these endeavors you list came from
philanthropic gifts - The Lions Club has been collecting and
distributing eyeglasses to poor children, and never asks for
public funding, for example. Govt’s responsibility was generally
confined to regulation and defense. But those are libertarian
principles derived from our founding, of which few people
seem to be aware, or care, so long as they can spend other
people’s money, and secure themselves a lifelong political
career, for all their “good works”, and maybe take a little off
the top for themselves.
You know Adam, you are the conmans’s dream, the Kleptocrats’s perfect dupe. Put a high sounding purpose to any largess, and you buy it hook line and sinker. I hope you never take up a career in law enforcement; detective work is not your thing.
I don’t know what’s more suspicious or more despicable, an anonymous earmark or a sponsored earmark that has no defined purpose at all.
Either way the tax payers are just an all-day sucker for these men and woman with no moral bearings.
[…] UPDATE: Albanys Insanity has a related article on earmarks that are currently being considered in the Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bill. It’s evil enough for Congressmen to hand out the pork for questionable, if not totally unconstitutional purposes, but why would an earmark be proposed with no Congressional sponsor? […]
The highest marginal federal tax rate is 37%…it used to be 90%. Taking your blood? give me a break! We have had tax break after tax break. We now pay a fraction in income taxes that other developed nations do. Nothing will satisfy you people untill we have a federal government that consists of nothing but a military. Do you take public transportation, collect social security, travel on an airplane, enjoy cheaper gasoline than any other developed counrty in the world, travel on highways, etc.? guess what, the federal government pays for these things with tax dollars. You libertarians are crazy, the only thing we can be assured of are death and taxes. Get over it! You want to live in the most prosperous country in the world? you have to pay for it, nothing is free.
So typical of a tax and spend liberal democrat, if the taxes somewhere else are higher, raise taxes, ifg we’re not at our constitutional taxing limint, reise taxes…….
Who do you work for Marinelli? Hoyt?
Since when is it the responsibility of we the taxpayers to fund everything under the sun.
Rus, Adam thinks it’s the government’s RESPONSIBILITY to fund EVERYTHING! He must of read it in the Constitution.
If it ain’t some Fascist program they’re for, then it’s a Socialist program. What would Adam do without the government nanny-state to control his life and pick his pocket?
Libraries, after-school programs, literacy programs…yea thats facist/socialist alright. (Just as an aside, Facism is extreme Right Wing ideology. Socialism and Communism is extreme Left Wing ideology, so if you are going to name call, get your terms right.)
Shouldnt you anti-government nuts be in a compound in Texas somewhere?
I believe you are talking about the necessay and proper clause of the Constitution? “To make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this Constitution in the government of the United States”
The Constitution also counted African Americans as 3/5 of a person and had no provision for women to vote and was written before the advent of the internal combustion engine, electricity, the telephone, computers, the internet, automatic weapons, etc, etc, etc.
Thanks for the lesson Adam on Socialism and Fascism, but I think I know more about it then you, since you don’t recognise it, even though it’s right in front of your face!
As a big government-loving nut, how do you account for it’s destructive effects on NYS, or do you just ignore that too?
“but I think I know more about it then you, since you don’t recognise it, even though it’s right in front of your face!” what?!? Facism is extreme right wing ideology and Communism is extreme left wing ideology. I dont know how else to say it.
Taxes didnt destroy NYS, look at NYC, its doing better than ever, and considering the majority of the population of the state lives in NYC and the surrounding areas, the state is doing fine. Its upstate where the problem lies, and those problems are due to the loss of the steel industry, which had nothing to do with high taxes.
Adam, the phrase refers to the enumerated powers, the vast majority of the programs of the federal government do not fit into that category. All of the worthwhile programs would be funded privately and more efficiently without stealing from our pockets and creating unnecessary layers of bureaucracy. The government isn’t looking out for your good, it is perpetuating a fraud that constitutes a massive jobs creating program that maintains the elegant lifestyle of the favored class.
The steel industry has been gone a long time Adam, to use that fallacious rationalization that upstate’s economic problems are the result of that loss is to say we are forever doomed. Will other industries not locate here until Steel returns?
You seem to think that a high tax burden is not a problem economically, if that were true, why have people and business’s fleeing NYS for that very same reason?
An economy is a very complex thing, it grows or shrinks spontaneously. It will grow where there is the best conditions for its growth. A burdensome government with its high tax and regulatory climate presents no healthy conditions for growth.
Regarding the “government nanny-state” issue, I think we need to take a look at the other “nanny” in the room, one that’s been taking care of Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and the rest for centuries: white privilege.
One of the problems I’m having with this conversation is that it seems like a grand assumption is being made: all taxpayers are treated equal. I understand that it might be a difficult thing for a white, male like Rus Thompson to have to “fund everything under the sun” but let’s not forget how much easier it’s been for him to take the position that government’s too big, too meddling, too involved. He and his family–despite whatever prejudices they may have faced in the past–have NOT been the victims of institutinalized racism for going on 250 years. If so, he may have a different position on social programs, welfare funding, and public schooling.
I’m not suggesting that our government doesn’t need reform–it does–but a political ideology that seems to have its heart set on protecting white, male privilege is not the route of which I’m supportive. And considering the constituents in the 144th Assembly district, they probably aren’t either.
One more thing: could any of you libertarians out there explain to me why your clubs are always so darned white-washed? (I don’t think I’ve ever met a libertarian that wasn’t a white male, or sleeping with one…)
Let me give you a clue my friend.
I make less money to support my family than the average welfare recipent, yet I do not depend on the government for anything. I work for anything I have, and I have very little. I was raised in a family that was on welfare (afdc) and swore that I would never have to depend on the SYSTEM for anything.
I was raised in a family of 9 kids, thrown out when I was 15, had an apartment, went to school and worked full time washing windows and cleaning floors. I was a long haired hippie that did not do the drugs that dragged my generation down.
My parents drank and my stepfather liked to beat his kids with the belt and an occasional stick. I still have the welt scares to prove it. I have lived on the streets, fought on the streets and through all this I have survived.
Don’t even try to come into my living room and call me a racist or spread your racist woes on me. I’ve been there lower than many. If you can’t grab yourself by your own bootstraps and get your life together, that is not my problem.
We have to remember the past and learn from it. We cannot live in the past and expect people to have pity on us and then depend on the government to carry me through the rest of my dreary life. Get a life, have some Faith, Trust God for your future, don’t blame me for your own self inflicted depression.
You must be pretty blind, I know alot of Black, Hispanic and Minority Conservatives and Libertarians. Need some glasses? The Lions Club gives them away to the needy.
Thanks for sharing
