Suozzi: I won’t back down - Newsday.com
A long shot by any definition, Thomas Suozzi says he’s staying in the race for governor despite the polls, the frustration level or what anyone says.
“What’s the worst that could happen? I lose an election?” the Nassau County executive asked rhetorically during a recent interview at amNewYork’s offices.
Suozzi, 43, faces long odds in the Sept. 12 primary against fellow Democrat, state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Recent polls show he trails Spitzer by more than 60 percentage points.
“Our numbers say he’s way, way in the soup,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “But miracles happen and … I give him credit for optimism.”
Suozzi’s decision to stay in the race against Spitzer has been met with some skepticism.
Former Democratic governor Mario Cuomo is among those who have urged him to step aside in the best interests of the party, and a newspaper reported last week that some in his inner circle have advised him to drop out, an assertion Suozzi disputes.
“Have we discussed whether I should get out or not? Absolutely,”
Suozzi said. “That’s been discussed since January, when I was thinking about even running in the first place because I’m running against Mr. Superstar, a larger-than-life figure that people think has no vulnerabilities, which is not true.”
“We’re going straight through to Sept. 12. … Everybody is with me,” he said, not mentioning the November election when the primary winner will face Republican John Faso.
Fast talking and personable, Suozzi said he has been traveling the state and holding town hall meetings.
He’s also doing any and all media, including appearances at radio stations
I do not believe the polls at all. Suozzi has a very good chance at winning the Primary. People are realizing how Spitzer id=s simply full of hot air and has no substance to what he says. Listen to his ads, do you hear any thing that he is actually going to do? Suozzi will tell you, invite him to your town and host a town meeting with him. You will be impressed.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWhy would you not believe in polls at all? They are an accurate way of ascertaining results using statistical samples. Suozzi is a carismatic candidate with many good ideas, but is not without fault. Nassau County is not in great shape and is falling back into disaray. Suozzi picked the wrong time to run, plain and simple. Just like John McCain picked the wrong time to run for President in 2000. He was a good guy too, his timing was just off.
I listened to Suozzi, and he was phenomenal! We sooo need someone like
him as governor, someone with a plan, unlike Spitzer, who just spits out
platitudes. Like you said in your campaign speech Rus, Spitzer’s prosecuted
corporate fraud, but hasn’t gone after a spit of govt waste, fraud and abuse.
Tom Suozzi is facing a huge deficit in Nassau County and will likely face a huge tax increase. In light of this, I call upon Suozzi to change his slogan to “Bankrupting NYS. He can do it because he’s done it.”
