Cahill urges override of governor’s early retirement vetoy
Albany – Assemblyman Kevin Cahill of Kingston has asked Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to reconvene the house to override Governor Pataki’s veto of the legislature’s state workforce reduction plan.
Last month the governor vetoed legislation that would have allowed public employees to retire with no penalties if they have 25 years of service and are 55 years of age or older.
The governor’s claim that the plan is unaffordable is “preposterous,†said Cahill.
The governor himself offered an early retirement incentive program that would have cost $450 million this year,†said Cahill. “The only difference was that that retirement program was basically gold parachutes for high level Pataki staffers. This one is open to all governments and allows people to make decisions based upon rational and sane policies of preparing for tomorrow and allowing the workforce of today – a very expensive workforce of today – to be replaced with a less expensive and younger workforce of tomorrow.â€
Cahill is a member of the Democrat majority in the Assembly.
Preposterous, no what’s preposterous is that you Mr. Cahill and Sheldon Silver think that we are a bottomless pit of money. We have had enough when are you going to get the message?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackEarly retirement gets rid of high paid government employees and replaces them with younger, lower paid workers…thus costing the government and taxpayers LESS! i fail to see how this is bad.
The retirement funds these retired workers will get is from the New York State Retirement fund (funded by employee contributions) not the state income or sales tax. I think you misunderstood the article.
The Early retirement incetive for NYS and NYC senior employees would definitely facilitate savings. Gov. Pataki’s reason for vetoing the 55/25 years of service for the ERI was it would cause a lot of money and hardship to NY. My suggestion is to sponsor an ERI bill for those 60 years and over with 20 or more years of experience. Many senior employees would take advantage of this incentive and this would be beneficial to the budget of NY.
Please send this message to Gov. Spitzer and the members of the legislature for consideration.
Thank you.
I agree with the above reply.
If Gov. Pataki vetoed the ERI last year to avoid too much govermnet spending, I would like to propose an ERI bill for those who are 60 years and over with 20 or more years service.
There are many senior workers who would participate and the goverment’s budget would benefit.
Please send my proposal to Gov. Spitzer and members of the legislature.
Please let me know when you would post my letter.
