News - Battle Of Words Between Two WNY Politicians.
Democratic Assemblyman Sam Hoyt and Democratic Councilman Joe Golombek have a stormy political history. It erupted into a barrage of name calling outside the Board of Elections Wednesday.
Golombek said : “A 12-year incumbent who has a record of simply being a member of the status quo — Shelly Silver’s poop boy in Albany.”
Hoyt said : “Joe Golombek is an absolute fraud. And Joe Golombek is a liar.”
The bitterness began in 2004 when Golombek challenged Hoyt in a primary for his State Assembly seat. Hoyt won a close election.
Hoyt later accused Golombek of accepting thousands in illegal contributions from a fund tied to Erie County Executive Joel Giambra.
Golombek said : “And I have been threatened and told since that time that my political days in the city of Buffalo are over.”
At Wednesday’s new conference Golombek accused Hoyt and Democratic party leaders of manipulating races for party committeemen to prevent Golombek from getting his party’s endorsement when he runs for re-election to the Buffalo Common Council next year.
County Legislature Majority leader Maria Whyte, a friend of Hoyt’s, is running for committeemen in nine districts.
Golombek: “She is running for the same office. You cannot do that.”
Hoyt crashed the press conference to defend Whyte calling Golombek a grandstander.
Hoyt: “Two years ago, he did precisely what he’s accusing Maria Whyte of doing today. Did I call a press conference back then when he pulled these questionable tactics as he said? No, because for better or worse, for better or for worse, it is within the rules of state government.”
Legislator Whyte defended her actions, saying what’s she’s doing is not uncommon or illegal, and that she’s merely using her name as a placeholder until the party can find enough people to run. As for Golombek, he says he’ll be running for re-election with or without the party’s endorsement.
There will be more about this very soon….

Hoyt pretty much succeeded in keeping this issue on the back burner, if you have noticed there has been little coverage on it. It needs to be brought back to the forefront again and their hidden agenda exposed.
Word on the street is Hoyt will step down and appoint Whyte as his successor.
The plan from Hoyts point is to put enough people in the committee seats to stop Joe Golombek from getting the endorsement next year.
Then of course if Spitzer gets elected Tokasz and Hoyt will have a cushy job with his administration.
New York politics at it’s worst.
It’s a soundbite world, and Hoyt apparently knows how to use them.
They just throw out words like “liar” and “fraud”, and though it’s not
true, well, now it’s out there, and it seems the only part of this that’s
getting any press.
It’s my understanding that the same “questionable tactics” to which Hoyt refers, can’t even be compared. Joe Golombek was obtaining signatures
for a delegate seat, and for a Primary against Hoyt a few years back.
Maria Whyte is running for committee seats in nine different districts, in
clear violation of case law and NYS Election Law. There is a deadline for
these petitions, and one can’t “placehold” to extend the deadline for
non-interested individuals. Assemblyman Hoyt is clearly condoning breaking the law.
