ALBANY, N.Y. — State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s role in a family financial trust may conflict with his job policing the state’s charitable organizations, according to a complaint filed by a political rival Thursday with the state Ethics Commission.
The complaint, filed by rival Democratic candidate for governor Tom Suozzi, requested a ruling on whether there is a conflict of interest. If so, Suozzi wants Spitzer to resign as a trustee of the Bernard and Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust.
The Ethics Commission is reviewing the matter, said commission spokesman Walter Ayres. The commission is prevented by law from publicly disclosing whether it is launching an investigation until it finds there is reasonable cause for charges.
