City of Buffalo May Expand Apprentice Requirement:
Councilman Antoine Thompson will be proposing changes to the City of Buffalo Apprentice Laws as early as today! The current city law requires all construction companies with city contracts that exceed $250,000 to have state approved worker-training programs (sound familiar). Thompson’s proposing two revisions; the first would decrease the threshold requiring mandated apprentice programs for contracts exceeding $25,000. The second, a compromise would require a threshold of $100,000 on contractors who work for the city. Other revisions would require at least 10 percent of contractors’ workforces to be made up of employees who participate in apprentice programs. Companies would also have to promise to make a good faith effort to have their workforce comprised of at least 25 percent minorities, 5 percent women and 25 percent city residents.
Contact a city council person today to state your position on the above revisions. Attached for your convenience is a list of the City of Buffalo council members.
From what I understand this was sent to committee by a 7 to 2 vote. They need to hear from you, call or email them to voice your opposition to this Law.
The other ones that need to hear from you is the County Legislature. Once again this revised bill was passed, it has been sent to Giambra, he should veto it and then of course the legislature will override the veto and we will be stuck with new Law that will drive up the cost of government projects and effectively lock out non union companies.
The legislature needs to hear from you! They have the votes to override, this cannot be allowed to happen folks. Union work costs us $27 a square foot more than non union work. We can’t afford it!

Wow… I didn’t realize it was $27 more per square foot. I figured $5 or $10 more per sq. ft. Yikes!
I thought the city wanted to give more contracts to minority and “small” business owners. How does this accomplish that? Another example of trying to please everyone to get the most votes. Or is it the Unions give more money then minorities and small business owners.
They or I should say Kennedy moved this fwd to please the unions, of course the rest have to go along to make them happy.
This does nothing for small business and minorities, nothing, unless they have a union construction job that is.
